Memory Care
What are Memory Care Communities?
Memory Care Communities offer a secure and controlled environment for residents who might otherwise wander out of the building. Some Memory Care Communities are part of a larger community that may include Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care all on one campus. They often have a home-like feel with soothing color schemes and are easy for residents to navigate. Staff members are specially trained in caring for persons with dementia. Memory Care Communities have music, activities, and routines all specially designed to help residents with dementia. Often, outside each resident’s room, there is a display of photos and information about the resident to help them recognize who they are, their family members, and their history.
Some Memory Care Communities have respite programs, where a resident can stay from 14 days up to 30 days. A respite stay can provide a much-needed break for the caregiver and give an introductory “test-drive” of how the resident might fit into the community permanently.
Monthly rates for Memory Care are higher than for Assisted Living, and average rates begin at $5000-7000 a month. This rate includes meals, activities, laundry, and housekeeping. There are additional charges for personal assistance and care. Memory Care Communities can accommodate residents from mild dementia to very advanced Alzheimer’s. If a resident has severe behavioral issues, they may need a specialized community.
